Two BJP leaders arrested in Tripura for assaulting policemen

Agartala/UNI:  A local court in Sonamura of West Tripura has sent two BJP leaders including the elected vice chairperson of Melaghar Municipal Council two days judicial custody last night for allegedly attacking police and violation of Covid lockdown last week.

According to report, police had arrested vice-chairperson Shapankar Sarkar and Kalipada Barman yesterday in connection with a case registered against them on May 16 last for allegedly assaulting two security personnel at around 2300 hrs when policemen objected their gathering in a road violating curfew.

Allegedly, four BJP leaders led by Sarkar attacked the security personnel and as a result, policeman Sabir Ahmed, TSR Nayek Rakesh Debbarma and a TSR Rifleman were injured. And, facing the organised attack police and TSR left the place and lodged specific complaint against Sarkar, Barman and two other BJP leaders Uttam Chakraborty and Ganesh Das.

However, police stormed their houses in the afternoon and picked up them. After producing them in the court, judge asked for case dairy and sent them to two days jail though police pleaded for remand. Police said Shapankar Sarkar and his friends of ruling BJP had boozed heavily in the market. As they were assembled in the late-night violating corona curfew norms police party challenged them and asked why they were moving in drunken condition at night in violation of curfew.

Allegedly, suddenly Sarkar and his companions attacked and injured the police besides trying to snatch the rifle wielded by a TSR jawan. But reinforcements came and the trouble makers were mildly lathicharge. All four underwent primary treatment in Melaghar hospital.

The BJP however, refused on making any comment on the incident and arrest of their leaders.
