Suvendu Adhikari resigns from Trinamool Congress' primary membership

Kolkata/IBNS: Former West Bengal Minister Suvendu Adhikari resigned from the primary membership of the ruling Trinamool Congress on Thursday.

He has sent the resignation letter to Trinamool chairperson Mamata Banerjee.

Adhikari on Wednesday resigned as an MLA in the West Bengal assembly.

However, Trinamool is not keen to give much importance to Adhikari's resignation.

"Trinamool is a big party. It does not matter whether one or two leaves. So many people are gathering to listen to Mamata Banerjee in rallies!" said West Bengal Minister and Trinamool veteran Subrata Mukherjee.

Adhikari, whose political position is speculated over the last several weeks, is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to poll-bound West Bengal on Dec 19.

The speculation was triggered after Shah's ministry upgraded the security cover of Adhikari to 'Z plus' from Z category.

Even after several rounds of talks with the Trinamool top brass and senior party leaders, Adhikari, who has resigned as the West Bengal Minister, refused to work for the party actively and continued to hold independent rallies.

Reacting to Adhikari's resignation, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha MP, Arjun Singh, told India Blooms, "He has done a great job by resigning. It would be even better if he joins the BJP."

"The BJP will be benefitted if Suvendu Adhikari joins. People of West Bengal together want to oust Mamata Banerjee," he added.
