Sri Lankan Navy arrests Indian fishermen again
Colombo, June 8 (IBNS): The Sri Lankan Navy on Saturday said it has arrested 73 Indian fishermen along with 16 Indian fishing trawlers for poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
"Sri Lanka Navy arrested 73 Indian fishermen along with 16 Indian fishing trawlers poaching well within in Sri Lankan waters on 07th June 2014," the Sri Lankan Navy said in a statement.
"41 Indian fishermen along with 08 Indian fishing trawlers engaged in poaching in the seas North of Thalaimannar were arrested by naval craft attached to the North Central Naval Command on routine patrol. Mean while 32 Indian fishermen and 08 Indian fishing trawlers engaged in poaching in the seas off Delft were arrested by SLNS Ranawickrama and naval craft attached to the Northern Naval Command on routine patrol," it said.
The arrested fishermen were handed over to the officials of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Thalaimannar and KKS for further action.
Meanwhile, media reports on Sunday said nine more Indian fishermen have been detained by the Sri Lankan Navy off Thalaimannar on charges of poaching.
"With this, the total number of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody has come up to 82 as of Sunday morning. As many as 18 trawlers, including two seized on Sunday, are in the Sri Lankan Navy’s possession," The Hindu reported.
This comes after the Sri Lankan government on Thursday released 33 Indian fishermen from its custody.
