Sri Lanka Navy arrests 20 Indian fishermen
Rameswaram, July 6 (IBNS): The Sri Lankan Navy on Saturday arrested 20 Indian fishermen and four fishing trawlers for "poaching" in Sri Lankan waters, north of Mannar.
"Naval Craft attached to the North Central Naval Command on routine patrol arrested 20 Indian fishermen and 04 Indian fishing trawlers poaching in Sri Lankan waters North of Mannar on 05th July 2014," the Sri Lankan Navy said in a statement.
The arrested fishermen and the trawlers were handed over to the officials of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Mannar for legal action, the statement said.
The neighbouring country's Navy on June 28 arrested 17 Indian fishermen and three fishing trawlers over "poaching" charges in Sri Lankan waters, north of Thalaimannar.
The series of arrests by the Sri lankan Navy led Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa earlier write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking immediate release of these fishermen.
