SP-BSP alliance enough to beat BJP in UP: Tejashwi Yadav on Congress question
Lucknow, Jan 14 (IBNS): Reacting to the non-inclusion of Congress in the Uttar Pradesh alliance, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Monday said the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are enough to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2019 General Elections, media reports said.
When asked about the Congress, which is with the RJD in Bihar, Tejashwi, who on Monday supported the SP-BSP alliance, cited recent by-polls successes to claim the two parties are enough to crush the saffron brigade.
Last year, the SP-BSP alliance had won in Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats, where by-polls were held.
The two UP seats were considered to be the strong holds of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya.
The RJD leader said the BJP will lose 100 seats in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand from its tally of 2014 General Elections.
Supporting the alliance, Tejashwi met Akhilesh on Monday and BSP supremo Mayawati a day ago.
Overlook of SP-BSP alliance:
Out of 80 Lok Sabha seats, the SP and BSP will fight in 38 seats each. Both the parties will not field any candidate in Amethi and Rae Bareli seats, which are traditionally the Congress' strongholds.
The SP and BSP will also not fight in two other seats, which have been left out for other regional parties.
Why did SP-BSP left out Congress:
Citing 1996 polls, Mayawati, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, clearly stated the Congress does not transfer its votes to allies.
The SP had experienced the same during the 2017 state polls, she added.
Congress to go solo:
The Congress has already announced it will fight in all 80 parliamentary seats of Uttar Pradesh.
Uttering no bitter word against Akhilesh-Mayawati duo, Congress chief Rahul on Saturday said: "I respect Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati's decision. It is a political decision. They must have taken the decision with a clear thought."
