Sonia Gandhi to be next Congress President

| @indiablooms | Aug 10, 2019, at 11:18 pm

New Delhi, Aug 10 (IBNS): After a marathon meeting of the Working Committee, Sonia Gandhi has been once again chosen as the new Congress president on Saturday.

UPA chairpersons Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi earlier in the day recused themselves from the process of selection of the new party chief.

"Neither I nor Rahul are party of any of the panels. It is a mistake that our names were added to the groups," Sonia told reporters earlier on Saturday.

As part of efforts to speed up the process of selection of the new Congress chief, the Congress working committee had earlier set up five committees to hold broader consultations on the issue with various PCC chiefs, AICC secretaries and CLP leaders even as it again urged Rahul Gandhi to reconsider his resignation from the post of party chief.

The post has been empty ever since Rahul Gandhi stepped down following the Lok Sabha elections where the Congress performed poorly.

In this year's Lok Sabha polls, the Congress managed to win only 52 seats in the 543 member Lower House of the Parliament.

The Bharatiya Janata Party won 303 seats as Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to power for the second term.

Rahul Gandhi, who became the president of the party in 2017, resigned following the poor show in the general polls.
