Several insurgency groups of NE involved in illegal narcotics trade: Assam DGP

Guwahati/IBNS: Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Thursday said that several insurgency groups in the North-Eastern region are involved in illegal narcotics trade in the region.

The Assam DGP told media in Guwahati that, narcotic terror is a reality and it is continuing in the region.

“Narcotic dealing is being done by several insurgency outfits in the area. Not only particular one outfit, all outfits are involved in trading of weapons, because drugs fetches lots of money and weapons require money. These outfits also sell weapons. We have whole instances of why the chief of United National Army had patronized methamphetamines and whole of opiate derivatives are as a result making its way in Assam and other parts of the North Eastern region and as well as other parts of the country,” Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said.

The top Assam cop also said that, the Assam police have lot of information about narcotic trade done by the insurgency groups.

The intelligence agencies have also claimed in many occasions that, several insurgency groups of the region are engaged into cultivation and transportation of opium.

On Thursday, the Narcotics Control Bureau organized a day long workshop and training programme on investigation abroad and extradition in Guwahati in association with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam police.
