Hyderabad, Jun 6 (UNI): In a huge blow to Congress Party, as many as 12 of 18 MLAs formally joined the Ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) after they sought a merger of the group into the latter and Assembly Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy acceded to the request.

A bulletin issued by the Secretary to the State legislature Dr V Narasimha Charyulu on Thursday night said the Speaker has taken note that the said 12 members of the Congress Legislature Party who constitutes two-thirds of its total members in the Telangana Legislative Assembly are deemed to have been merged with TRS legislature party in the house in terms of paragraph 4 of the tenth schedule of Constitution of India.

Accordingly, seats are allotted to them along with members of Telangana Rashtra Samithi Legislature Party in the house.

The bulletin also said the leader of Telangana Rashtra Samithi Legislature Party has communicated to the Speaker that the TRS had agreed the request for the merger of the aforesaid 12 members of Congress Legislature Party in Telangana Legislative Assembly into TRS and requested to take necessary action.

With this, the Congress lost its Opposition Party status in the assembly as its strength has come down to six.

The strength of the Congress in the 119-member House came down to 18 after Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President N Uttam Kumar Reddy tendered his resignation from the Assembly on Wednesday.

He has been elected to Lok Sabha from Nalgonda.
