SC allows Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad's apolitical visit to Jammu and Kashmir
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has allowed senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to visit Jammu and Kashmir, after he sought permission from the apex court to meet his family and relatives in the newly-formed Union Territory.
The Supreme Court allowed Azad to visit Jammu, Baramullah, Anantnag and Srinagar districts and meet people, but put restrictions on holding political rallies.
Azad, who is also the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, said his petition was a personal one and not in the capacity of a Congress leader.
The Rajya Sabha member said he is worried about the well being of his friends and relatives and wants to visit his home state to meet them.
He said his earlier attempts to go to Jammu and Kashmir, after the abrogation of article 370, had failed thrice.
Azad's petition was heard by a three-judge bench of CJI Ranjan Gogoi, SA Bobde and S Abdul Nazeer.
Earlier Azad along with other Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi had tried to visit Jammu and Kashmir but were not allowed by the administration to step out of the Srinagar airport.
