New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said 40 lakh people died in India due to Covid 19 and accused the government of hiding the real figures.

Rahul Gandhi quoted a report from The New York Times that said India is stalling World Health Organization's efforts to make the Covid death toll public.

“Modi ji does not speak the truth, nor lets the truth be spoken. They are still lying no one died of oxygen shortage,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

“I had said earlier as well, 40 lakh people have died in India during Covid due to government negligence, not five lakh,” he said.

“Fulfill your duty Modiji. Provide Rs 4 lakh compensation to families of the victims,” he said.

According to the health ministry there have been around 5.22 lakh Covid deaths in the country so far.
