Punjab: 16 killed, many injured in factory blast

Gurdaspur, Sep 4 (IBNS/UNI) At least 16 people died and many more were injured in a blast at a cracker factory at Batala-Jalandhar road in Gurdaspur district of Punjab on Wednesday evening.

According to reports, the blast was so powerful that walls near the factory collapsed and vehicles were damaged by its impact.

Senior police and civil officers reached the spot after the blast.

Investigation into the incident has started.

The blast reportedly occurred at around 4 pm.

Punjab CM Amarinder Singh tweeted: "  Deeply anguished to learn of the loss of lives due to the blast in the firecracker factory in Batala. Rescue operations are underway with the DC & SSP heading the relief efforts. "
