Washington: US has condemned the remark made by ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's former leader Nupur Sharma which sparked an uproar in Muslim countries and even triggered violence in some parts of India.

In a press briefing, US Spokesperson Ned Price said: "This is something that we’ve condemned. We condemn the offensive comments made by two BJP officials, and we were glad to see that the party publicly condemned those comments."

He further said: "We regularly engage with the Indian Government at senior levels on human rights concerns, including freedom of religion or belief, and we encourage India to promote respect for human rights."

Sharma's controversial comment on Prophet Mohammed has drawn fury from the Muslims community members across the country.

Violent protests against the comment have taken place in different corners of the country, including in West Bengal, for the past several days.

Following backlash from the Gulf countries, the BJP swung into action and suspended Sharma and her colleague Naveen Jindal who too had made a controversial comment on Prophet Muhammed.
