Postal ballots for Coronavirus patients, elderly people to cast votes in India

New Delhi/IBNS: In a major change brought in the electoral system by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday, people above 65 years of age and those infected with Novel Coronavirus have been allowed to avail postal ballots to cast their votes, media reports said.

Earlier people over 80 years of age, people in essential services not posted in home state and government employees posted for electoral duties were allowed to avail postal ballots.

The elderly people have been advised by the government to stay indoors as they are more prone to get infected with the deadly virus.

The major change has been brought by the EC just ahead of the Bihar assembly polls which are scheduled to be held in October-November.

The EC, however, didn't say a word yet whether the state polls will be pushed back due to the Covid-19 situation.
