Police arrests BJP team, Naqvi slams TMC govt

Kolkata, Oct 30 (IBNS) West Bengal’s Birbhum district was turned into a political battleground as senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, were arrested when they tried to enter a village despite prohibitory orders imposed in the region, triggering another conflict with the ruling Trinammol Congress (TMC) in the state.

Besides Naqvi, the BJP's Central delegation included senior leaders such as Kirti Azad, Udit Raj and West Bengal's party unit President Rahul Sinha.

The leaders were later released on bail.

Following his arrest, Naqvi told media: "The police behaved undemocratically today. It seemed that they were  aiming to shield anarchists and terrorists."

"If the government had spent half the energy they used to arrest us in apprehending the anti-nationals, it would have been better," he said.

Naqvi said the 'condition' of the state is not good at the present moment.

The BJP team allegedly tried to enter the troubled Makra village where clashes broke out last week between alleged supporters of the BJP and the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress. At least three people were killed and two severely injured in the violence.

The police did not allow the BJP, Congress and a Left Front teams to visit the village on Wednesday. A team of Left MLAs and MPs that was trying to enter were also arrested.

“Even though the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front is not in power in Bengal, their misrule still continues during the Trinamool regime. The Mamata banerjee government is following in the footsteps of its predecessor in terms of unleashing political violence in rural outskirts,” said Rahul Sinha, after being arrested by the police.
