Phagwara: Woman held for killing mother-in-law

Phagwara, Apr 1 (UNI): Phagwara police today arrested one more accused involved in the murder case of an elderly woman, Satnam Kaur, who was strangulated at her house in Adarsh Nagar in Phagwara on Friday evening.

Phagwara police superintendent Mandeep Singh confirmed this and told this correspondent here today that the arrested accused was identified as Anju Rani, a resident of Daduwal village.

Earlier, the police have arrested her daughter-in-law Harjot Kaur and her accomplice Vikram Singh of Sarhali village on Sunday who were produced before judicial magistrate Phagwara on Monday evening. Both have been sent to police remand for two days. The SP said the third accused Anju would be produced before court on Tuesday.

He said the reason behind the murder was property dispute. Satnam lived alone at her house after the death of her husband.

One of her sons died in 2017 and his wife Harjot was living in Daduwal village. SP Mandeep Singh said Harjot had confessed her crime and told the police that she and Vikram went to Satnam’s house on Friday evening and strangled her after having tea with her.

Earlier, when nothing was found missing, the police suspected that personal enmity might be the reason behind the murder. The SP said the main accused, Harjot Kaur, had hired the other two for the crime.
