Opposition keeping political interests above that of the country: PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday slammed the Opposition for disrupting the parliament's proceeding saying that they keep their political interests above that of the country.

In his online address on the 10th death anniversary of former Samajwadi Party Rajya Sabha member Harmohan Singh Yadav, Modi said, "Many times, the opposition parties put some obstacles in the government's work as they could not implement the decisions taken by them when they were in power."

His remarks come as proceedings in both Houses of Parliament continue to remain stalled since the beginning of the Monsoon session last Monday.

PM Modi said the Opposition hurls questions at the government every time a decision is taken.

"Now, if they (decisions) are implemented, they oppose it. People of the country don't like it," he said.

He maintained that the Opposition's attitude in recent times has reflected an "ideology or political interests above the interests of society and the country."

Earlier today, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla suspended four Congress MPs for protesting with placards on the issue of price rises within the House.

At first, the Speaker warned them to maintain decorum in the House and asked them to hold the placards outside if they wanted to protest. However, the Congress MPs refused to pay heed to Speaker's orders and were suspended by him till August 12, the end of the Monsoon session.

After their suspension, they staged a protest at the Gandhi Statue inside the Parliament premises.
