Opposition in Rajya Sabha presses for discussion on Delhi violence

New Delhi/UNI: Opposition parties in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday unanimously demanded a discussion on recent Delhi violence which has claimed 47 lives.

In the post lunch session, Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad pressed for an immediate debate stating that the entire world was discussing the issue but we are not able to take it up in the House which is a matter of concern.

Since the incident is of such a huge magnitude, it should be taken up urgently as it it will loose its relevance later like there is no point having a medicine after a week for today's headache.

The Congress leader said that the House should also pay its condolence to the 47 people who have lost their lives in the violence following which, Leader of House Thawar Chand Gehlot said the government is ready for discussion whenever the Chair decides.

At this, BJP member Bhupendra Yadav said that it is the prerogative of the Chairman to decide on the date for a discussion, so it is not proper to put pressure on the Chairman on the issue.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Anand Sharma said when both-- the government and Opposition- are ready, then why not to start the discussion at 11 tomorrow?

Thereafter, the Deputy Chairman adjourned the House for the day.

This is the second day in succession during the second leg of the budget session that the Upper House has witnessed uproar from the Opposition benches over the Delhi violence.

Yesterday also, the Opposition had created a ruckus over the same demand forcing repeated adjournments of the House.

Earlier in the day, the Upper House proceedings were adjourned twice, first till 1400 hrs and again till 1500 hrs after uproar by the Opposition Members demanding a discussion on Delhi riots, leading to suspension of the Zero Hour and Question Hour.
