'Not the time for ego or anger': Margaret Alva urges Mamata Banerjee for support in VP election

| @indiablooms | Jul 23, 2022, at 01:42 am

New Delhi: A day after the Trinamool Congress announced its decision to abstain from voting, Margaret Alva, who is the Opposition's consensus candidate for the Vice-President election, urged party chief Mamata Banerjee to drop differences and support her nomination.

Alva termed Trinamool's move disappointing.  “This isn’t the time for ‘whataboutery’, ego or anger. This is the time for courage, leadership & unity,” she wrote on Twitter.

“I believe, @MamataOfficial, who is the epitome of courage, will stand with the opposition," she added.

TMC has made it clear that it can neither go with NDA’s candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar nor can it support the Opposition’s choice Margaret Alva as it had “not been consulted” on her candidature.

“Margaret Alva has a good equation with Mamata Banerjee but Vice President of the country cannot be elected based on personal equations. So the party has certain issues which were left to MPs to decide and 85% of them said, we should abstain from voting process,” party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said, announcing the decision, reported Indian Express.

Margaret Alwa will be contesting against BJP-led NDA's nominee Jagdeep Dhankhar in the vice-presidential elections scheduled on August 6.

Dhankhar had been at loggerheads with the ruling TMC government in West Bengal because of his relentless criticism of chief minister Mamata Banerjee and her administration over a range of issues since he assumed office as the governor of the state in 2019.
