Newly elected BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka succumbs to Covid-19

Bengalauru/IBNS: Newly elected BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka Ashok Gasti, who was undergoing treatment at the Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru for Covid-19, died late Thursday night. He was 55-years-old.

“Shri Ashok Gasti, Hon’ble MP from Rajya Sabha who was admitted to Manipal Hospital and diagnosed with severe Covid 19 pneumonia passed away at 10.31 pm. He was 55 years old. He was critically ill with multi organ failure and was on life support system in the ICU under constant observation by our expert panel of doctors. We deeply regret the lower and express our condolences to his family and friends, ” Manipal Hospital said, reported HT.

Gasti was admitted to hospital on September 2 and was suffering from breathing difficulties for the last few days, said reports.

He was from Raichur in north Karnataka and was earlier a booth-level worker of BJP.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Gasti a "dedicated karyakarta" and condoled his death on Twitter:

Gasti was a first time Rajya Sabha MP. After he was elected unopposed in June last, the lawmaker had not attended Parliament due to the pandemic.
Condolences started pouring in on Twitter after Mr Gasti's death.

"Shocked and pained on the untimely demise of Rajya Sabha MP and senior BJP leader from Karnataka, Shri Ashok Gasti ji. Over the years, he served the organization & nation in multiple roles. My deepest condolences are with his family in this hour of grief. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti," Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted.

Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu also condoled his death and said Gasti was known "for his simplicity and commitment for the upliftment of the downtrodden".

Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar tweeted: "Deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing way of Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka Shri. Ashok Gasti. My condolences to his family and friends."
