New Delhi, Sept 11 (IBNS): Indian PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday greeted the people on the auspicious occasion of Onam.

“Greetings on the auspicious occasion of Onam! May this festival further the spirit of happiness, well-being and prosperity in our society," the Prime Minister said.

Onam, predominantly observed by the Malayali community, is a week long festival commemorating the homecoming of mythological lower caste King Mahabali, whose rule was ended by Vamana, one of Lord Vishnu's Dasavataram.

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind said: " Greetings and good wishes to fellow citizens, particularly to our brothers and sisters from Kerala in India and abroad, on Onam. May this harvest festival bring immense joy and prosperity to each one of us #PresidentKovind."
