Narendra Modi in Maldives: PM given ceremonial welcome, meets President

Male, June 8 (IBNS): Narendra Modi, who recently led his Bharatiya Janata Party script a massive victory in the Lok Sabha polls, arrived in Maldives to mark his first foreign tour since taking oath as the PM of India for second consecutive term.

Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome in Maldives.

He was honoured with a 21-gun salute.

After reaching Maldives, Modi said his visit indicates the importance India attaches to strong ties with the Republic of Maldives and the desire to boost cooperation in various spheres.

"Reached the Republic of Maldives. This visit indicates the importance India attaches to strong ties with the Republic of Maldives and the desire to boost cooperation in various spheres," he said.

After completing his Maldives visit, Modi will travel to Sri Lanka.

Modi presented Maldives president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih a cricket bat that has been signed by Team India members who are playing the World Cup in England.

Modi tweeted: "Connected by cricket! My friend, President @ibusolih is an ardent cricket fan, so I presented him a cricket bat that has been signed by #TeamIndia  playing at the #CWC19."

During his meeting with the President, the key issue was to focus on further deepening special relationship by expanding cooperation across sectors.

"Mutually beneficial partnership Warm discussions marked the meeting between PM @narendramodi & President of Maldives @ibusolih. Focus on further deepening our special relationship by expanding cooperation across sectors," MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

Modi was earlier received at the airport by country's Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.


Shahid tweeted: "Great Honour to receive PM Shri @narendramodi at Velana International Airport on his first State Visit overseas after taking oath for a second term. No doubt, this will be a momentous visit that would elevate #Maldives #India relationship to new heights."
