Mumbai records heaviest rain in 24 hrs since 2005, 21 dead
Mumbai, Jul 2 (IBNS): At least 21 people were killed as Mumbai received the heaviest of rains in the last 24 hours since the 2005 deluge.
The rains have crippled traffic and flooded the airport forcing cancellation and delay of flights.
The Met office has sounded a red alert for Mumbai on Tuesday, warning of more rain.
Two more people were drowned in suburban Malad (East) when their SUV got stuck in a heavily waterlogged underpass late on Monday night, media reports said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has been monitoring the situation from the Mumbai civic body's control room.

The Indian Navy has deployed several teams to help the civic body in their rescue operations in the flooded areas.

The heavy rain have left the railway tracks flooded resulting in the cancellation of several suburban and long-distance trains.
About 52 flights have been cancelled and 54 were diverted owing to the bad weather. A SpiceJet plane skidded last night while landing.
"Our team is trying their best to bring the main runway back in operation and this may take upto 48 hrs," the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport officials posted from its Twitter handle.

Fadnavis has urged people to stay indoors unless it was absolutely essential.
"Due to heavy rain forecast in Mumbai even today by IMD, People are advised to stay indoors unless there is any emergency," Fadnavis's office tweeted.

All government offices, schools and colleges remained closed in Mumbai on Tuesday. Private firms had asked employees to work from home.

Earlier in the morning, 19 people were killed and many injured after a compound wall crashed in Mumbai's Malad East early Tuesday morning.

A 10-year-old girl is trapped in debris after a wall collapsed in Mumbai's Malad due to heavy rain late last night. The incident occurred at around 2am on Tuesday.
Massive rescue efforts had started after a faint voice of the girl was heard coming out from the debris asking for water. However, Mumbai Fire Brigade-led rescue teams were unable to rescue the girl from under the debris due to poor weather, uneven and muddy ground.
The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those who died in the Malad wall collapse.
High level enquiry will be initiated into the unfortunate incident.
