Srinagar, May 2 (UNI): A policeman was shot at and critically injured by militants in downtown Srinagar, a police spokesperson said on Thursday.

He said militants fired at a policeman, identified as Illiyas Ahmad Khan, near his residence in Khanyar area in downtown Srinagar late on Wednesday evening.

''Khan was critically injured in the attack,'' he said, adding the wounded was immediately taken to S.K. Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS).

He said the militants managed to escape from the spot under the cover of darkness.

"Police has registered a case and initiated investigation to nab the attackers," he added.

A family member of the policeman told UNI that the health condition of the policeman is stated to be stable.
