Mayawati questions exclusion of Muslims from CAA
Lucknow/UNI: Citing Constitution, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Wednesday questioned the exclusion of Muslims from the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
She asked the Narendra Modi government to withdraw the CAA, calling it unconstitutional as it singles out a particular community.
"Why single out Muslims from the Act. Everyone knows how the Muslims, who had shifted from India after partition, are facing severe atrocities in Pakistan. Should they not be allowed to come back to India like other people?" she questioned.
"I appeal to the Centre to withdraw this Act and bring a modified one in the Parliament," she further said.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday on the occasion of her 64th birthday, Mayawati said CAA should be for all and not selective.
Slamming Congress for questioning her party's role in the CAA protest, the BSP chief said, "Congress and company was only trying to confuse the people of the country by claiming themselves to be the only party talking for the people. "
''Everyone knows the real face of the Congress and their past history. People don't believe them," she said while claiming that BSP never believes in violent protest.
BSP had opposed the bill in Parliament and will continue to do so in a peaceful way till it is withdrawn, she said.
The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister was also critical of the introduction of police commissioner system in Lucknow and Noida in UP, saying it is just a drama by the BJP government.
"Law and order in the state is deteriorating day by day and 'jungle raj' prevails. This new system is nothing but an eyewash as till there is a political will, it cannot be controlled, " she said, alleging that most of the criminals are linked with the ruling party.
"You all have seen my government when MP, legislators and officials were not spared if they were found involved in crime," she told the reporters.
During her press meet, the BSP chief did not utter a word on Samajwadi Party and her attack mostly centred on Congress and BJP.
She also did not gave any specific reply on her party's future political strategy and whether BSP will have electoral alliance with any party.
