Maya meets Badaun gangrape victims' family
Badaun, June 1 (IBNS): Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday visited Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh and met the family members of the two Dalit, minor girls, who were allegedly gangraped and hanged to death here.
Addressing media after the meeting, she said ,"I met the family. They told me that they were being pressurised to accept the crime and also there was an attempt to save the culprits. I strongly condemn this."
Slamming the Samajwadi party (SP) government in the state, she said, "There is no law and order in the state. It has turned into an absolute jungle raj (reign of the forest) here."
She appealed to the Centre for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case.
The BSP supremo also asked the Akhilesh Yadav led state government to provide security to the victims' family.
"The SP government should begin a special drive against all these criminal elements and provide security to the victims' family," she said.
Ahead of her visit to Badaun, a fresh controversy emerged as a farmer's land was cleared to build a helipad for the BSP chief to land.
Besides this, other elaborate arrangements included setting up of a stage and a tent.
Earlier in the day, Mayawati demanded the imposition of President's rule in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
"Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav supports the rapists or raises voice against the hanging of rapists. Therefore, under his party's rule, no justice can be provided to the rape victims' family," Mayawati said addressing the media here.
"I urge the Centre to impose President's rule in the state," she said.
The BSP chief also said that the "Centre should order speedy inquiry into the case."
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said his government is ready for a CBI probe into the Badaun gangrape and murder case.
"The Uttar Pradesh government is ready to recommend a CBI probe. Will soon send a request to the Centre," said a statement issued by Akhilesh Yadav.
Mayawati's visit on Sunday comes a day after Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi not only met the victims' family but also went to the site where the two girls were hanged.
"The incident should be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Such crimes against women cannot be tolerated in any part of India," said Gandhi.
"The father of the victims told me that compensation cannot restore their honour," he said.
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Police on Saturday said they have arrested the fifth accused in the case, while two others are still absconding.
So far, of the seven accused, policeman Sarvesh Yadav, his brothers Pappu, Awadhesh, Urvesh and policeman Chhatrapal Yadav have been arrested.
Two Dalit minor sisters were allegedly gangraped and then hanged from a tree at Katra village in Badaun on Wednesday.
The cousin sisters, aged 14 and 15 respectively, were reportedly missing since Tuesday night.
The victims' family alleged that the police refused to register a a First Information Report (FIR) into the incident.
Later, coming under pressure from angry locals who took to the streets demanding action against the culprits, the police registered an FIR against seven people, including two constables of Ushait police station.
Akhilesh Yadav on Friday said that the Badaun rape case will be sent to a fast track court.
