Nagpur/UNI: The tailoring art of the Nagpur Central Jail inmates has come in handy as there is dearth of masks owing to the COVID-19 spread.

After the tentacles of the deadly pandemic reached India, the masks and hand sanitisers have been wiped off from the markets.

In such a precarious time, a total of 500 masks stitched by the jail inmates have been supplied to other district jails while overwhelming orders from six other places have been received, Nagpur Jail Superintendent Anup Kumre told on Friday.

He said, "Nearly 300 masks were supplied to Chandrapur district jail, 200 to Bhandara Jail while 350 will be delivered to Washim Jail soon."

"The mask orders from six districts of Vidarbha region have been received," he underscored.

He further said, "Masks made by prisoners have also been supplied to the Social Welfare Department, Nagpur Sessions Court, Tribal Development Department, Family Court and several other government offices."

"Some private entities have also approached for face mask supplies," he apprised, mentioning that fabric and raw materials are being made available to them by the jail administration.
Briefing on the steps taken to shield the prisoners and staff from the contagious disease, he informed, "Antiseptic soaps have been provided to prisoners and the jail staff wear masks and use santisers."

"As a precautionary measure, the visitors are not allowed to meet the prisoners," he added.
