Mamata not on speakers' list in Covid VC with Modi, likely to skip meeting

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to skip the video conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Covid-19 on Wednesday as she has not been named on the list of speakers, reports said.

However, a senior official from the West Bengal government may attend the meeting.

Modi is holding a meeting for the first time since the Centre announced Unlock 1, where major socio-economic aspects of life have been allowed to reopen, with all CMs on Jun 16 and 17.

On the second day of the two-day meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, the representatives of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Telangana will be present.

As Mamata has not been listed as one of the speakers in the meeting, West Bengal's ruling party Trinamool Congress (TMC) has hit out at the central government for its alleged partiality.

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Trivedi tweeted, "It seems the Centre's so worried about exposing itself to  @MamataOfficial's constructive criticism on #COVID response that our hon'ble CM's been reduced to just a mute spectator for the latest round of VCs with the PM. People of Bengal won't forgive this!"

West Bengal Education Minister and TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee tweeted, "The Centre has once again humiliated the people of Bengal and decided to silence @MamataOfficial. Consultation in the name of video conferences is a mere hogwash if the Chief Ministers aren't allowed to put forth their concerns."
