'Mamata fooled Muslims': Humayun Kabir explodes after TMC suspends him over 'Babri Masjid-style mosque' demand; announces new party

Kolkata/IBNS: Trinamool Congress (TMC) rebel MLA Humayun Kabir was on Thursday suspended from the party after he triggered a political storm by demanding the construction of a mosque modelled after the Babri Masjid in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.

Kabir, a prominent political figure in Bharatpur, was suspended shortly before Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee’s rally in Baharampur.

The 64-year-old, who had been invited to the event, walked out after state minister Firhad Hakim announced the disciplinary action.

Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Hakim said Kabir was suspended for “not correcting his conduct” despite repeated warnings.

He accused the MLA of indulging in communal politics that could benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), adding, “We won’t accept any divisive politics.”

Moments after the announcement, Kabir launched a sharp attack on Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of “fooling Muslims.” He alleged that the Chief Minister was capable of “nothing except arresting or killing me through a conspiracy.”

Referring to the recent inauguration of the Jagannath Temple in Digha, Kabir said, “The temple was built and prasads were distributed, but Muslims have been fooled.”

Kabir also declared that he would announce his own political outfit on December 22, claiming it is “ready” and vowing to contest 135 out of 294 assembly seats in the 2026 West Bengal elections.

Kabir’s Babri Masjid Remark

The controversy erupted after Kabir claimed that a foundation stone for a “Babri Masjid” would be laid on December 6 in Beldanga — the 33rd anniversary of the mosque’s demolition. He said the construction would take three years.

Kabir insisted that Muslims “have the right to build a mosque,” and added that if there were legal objections to using the name “Babar,” he would consider a different name. He further stated he was ready to “become a martyr” for the cause and challenged opponents to “come to Beldanga,” signalling defiance amid rising political tensions.
