New Delhi, Aug 14 (IBNS): On the occasion of Independence Day, Major Mukund Varadarajan has been posthumously conferred the Ashok Chakra.

Varadarajan was killed during an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir this year.

Ashok Chakra is India's  highest peace-time gallantry award.

He belongs to the 44th Battalion of the Rastriya Rifles (22 Rajput).

"The officer while leading an anti-terrorist search operation in village Qazipathri in J&K, came under heavy fire from a group of Hizbul Mujaheddin terrorists. During the operation, before attaining martyrdom, Major Varadarajan, displayed exemplary leadership skills, raw courage planning and swift action which culminated with the elimination of the three top ranked Hizbul terrorists," the Indian government said in a statement.

The President and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Pranab Mukherjee has approved 55 Gallantry Awards to Armed Forces Personnel and members of Paramilitary Forces which includes one Ashoka Chakra, 12 Shaurya Chakras, 39 Sena Medal (Gallantry), one Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry) and two Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry).
