New Delhi/UNI: The Election Commission, on Friday, decided to conduct polls for the nine vacant seats in Maharashtra Legislative Council on May 21.

The decision was taken a day after Governor BS Koshyari requested the poll body to declare elections to the state legislative council.

According to the Commission, the notification will be issued on May 4 and the last date of filing nomination will be May 11.

The last date for withdrawal of candidatures will be May 14 followed by counting of votes on May 21.

The polls will be conducted amid crisis as the largest number of COVID-19 cases are being reported in Maharashtra. Since Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has to be elected to the legislature to continue as the Chief Minister, the polls are required.

Nine legislative council seats fell vacant on April 24 in Maharashtra.

'Election Commission today reviewed the matter concerning feasibility of conduct of biennial election for

the nine vacant seats of the MLC by MLAs in the state of Maharashtra. Sunil Arora, Chief Election Commissioner joined the meeting with Ashok Lavasa, Election Commissioner and Sushil Chandra, Election Commissioner over video call from the US', the poll body said in a statement.
