Thane/UNI:  A constable was seriously injured when a mob assaulted a police party while they were trying to resolve a quarrel between two groups in Mumbra suburb of this district, police informed on Friday.

Talking to UNI, Mumbra Police Station SHO stated, "On May 13 around 2200 hours, a call was received regarding two warring groups fighting among themselves in the Jeevan Baugh locality."

He further said, "Initially, three policemen of the crime unit rushed to the scene, and intervened in the quarrel trying to pacify the crowd. However, the crowd of around 400, including women, became violent and attacked the trio personnel."

The assailant pelted stones owing to which a constable was badly injured while the police motorbike was damaged, sleuths told, adding that they also made an unsuccessful attempt to torch the two-wheeler.

The trio policemen managed to escape the violent assault, and reached the police station after which the seniors rushed to the scene along with additional force. Subsequently, the situation was brought under control.

Offence under the IPC section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) coupled with rioting provision has been registered against the mob. No arrest has been made yet, apprised police.

On May 11, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh stated that 207 cases of assault on police were registered from March 22 to May 10. The Minister has vowed that such attacks will not be tolerated and punitive action will be taken against the perpetrators.
