Maharashtra: 14 migrant workers die as train runs over them in Aurangabad, PM Modi expresses grief

Aurangabad/UNI/IBNS: At least 14  migrant workers were crushed to death on Friday as a freight train ran over them near Maharashtra's Aurangabad city, officials said.

The incident left five others hurt.

The train was running between  Badnapur and Karmad.

According to the reports, the workers, who worked in a steel company in Jalna, had set out on foot to catch a special train from Aurangabad to reach their native state.

"They were crushed while they were all sleeping on the track", sources told UNI.

The accident occured at around 530 hours.

All top officials of the district have rushed to the spot.

PM Narendra Modi mourned the death of people in the tragedy and tweeted: " Extremely anguished by the loss of lives due to the rail accident in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Have spoken to Railway Minister Shri Piyush Goyal and he is closely monitoring the situation. All possible assistance required is being provided."

The Railways Ministry on Friday ordered a probe into the incident.

"Injured have been taken to Aurangabad Civil Hospital," the ministry said in a statement.

"During early hours today after seeing some labourers on track, loco pilot of goods train tried to stop the train but eventually hit them between Badnapur and Karmad stations in Parbhani-Manmad section. The Injured have been taken to Aurangabad Civil Hospital. Inquiry has been ordered,"the ministry said.
