Maha polls: Shiv Sena, BJP to continue alliance
Mumbai, Sept 23 (IBNS): In an arduous attempt to save the 25-year-old 'Mahayuti' alliance ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Shiv Sena on Tuesday sent a new seat sharing proposal to the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) where the former has agreed to offer 130 seats to the latter.
According to reports, the Sena has offered 130 seats to the BJP and 7 seats to other allies.
Under the new proposal, the Sena has kept 151 out of the 288 seats for itself.
With this, the seat-sharing imbroglio seems to reach an end where both parties have resorted to continue the 25-year-old alliance.
While, the Sena wants their chief to be made the Chief Minister of the state on winning the polls, Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday said he has no such ambition and that the love of the people is enough for him.
The tension escalated when both sides stuck to their stance and the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance was on the verge of a breakdown.
The tug-of-war between the two allies went on for few weeks with each party demanding a formidable portion of seats to contest and the other quashing it.
The two parties so far on Sunday failed to arrive at a seat-sharing agreement earlier despite long backroom consultations in both the political camps.
On Monday morning, media reports had claimed that in a bid to salvage his party's 25-year-old alliance in Maharashtra for the upcoming Assembly polls, Shah telephoned Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray.
According to reports, Shah insisted Thackeray that the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance must continue and urged Sena chief to rethink on the proposal to the BJP in which they refused to yield beyond 119 seats to the coalition partner.
But, later, those were dismissed by the Sena, who clarified that Uddhav Thackeray has not received any call from Shah.
In a marathon meeting in New Delhi on Sunday, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah were present, the party’s Central Election Committee (CEC) is understood to have shortlisted 120 candidates.
Similarly, the Shiv Sena has also prepared their list.
According to BJP sources, Modi was eager to avoid any unpleasant situation and continue with the alliance despite his displeasure about Uddhav’s “audacious” comment on giving seats.
On Friday, Sena chief made it clear to BJP that, in Maharashtra the Shiv Sena is a party that gives, not a party that takes.
The BJP and Shiv Sena need to find a solution soon as the last date of filing nomination is Sept 27.
