Srinagar, June 23 (IBNS) A militant of Pakistan based militant group Lashker-e-Taiba was killed, while another terrorist managed to escape in a 19-hour long gunfight in north Kashmir's Sopore town on Monday.
The police said it launched an anti-militancy operation in Krankshivan colony in Sopore, 55 km from Srinagar, with the assistance of the Army following information about the presence of militants in the area.

"As the cordon around the house where the militants were hiding was being tightened, they started indiscriminate firing at security forces," a police official said.

Police said one militant was killed in the encounter which lasted for 19 hours. The slain ultra has been identified as senior Lashkar commander Mehmood Bai while  a local militant, Javaid Ahmad Matoo, managed to escape from the encounter site.

Locals said the residential house of Abdul Ahad Mir where the militants were hiding was also damaged during the fierce gun-battle.

"This morning police had brought the parents of the local militant Javaid Ahmad Matoo, who also was holed up, to urge him to surrender before the forces," sources said.

Official sources said that as the joint team of forces was clearing the debris,  Matoo fled.

A search operation has been initiated to nab the militant.

The operation team was a joint force of Army's 52 RR, 22 RR, CRPF and SOG posted in the area along with the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
