Lalu Prasad Yadav's daughter Rohini Acharya 'quits' politics, 'disowns' family after RJD's Bihar defeat

Patna/IBNS: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter, Rohini Acharya, has triggered a major political shock just a day after the party’s crushing defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections.

In a dramatic announcement on Saturday, Rohini declared she was quitting politics altogether—and, more shockingly, cutting ties with her own family.

The announcement on X came within hours of the RJD’s vote share collapsing, dropping from 75 seats to roughly 25, marking one of the party’s worst electoral showings in recent years.

Rohini, a Singapore-based doctor who donated a kidney to her father, has often been seen as a moral and emotional anchor for the Yadav family despite having a limited electoral track record.

She contested the Saran Lok Sabha seat last year but lost. Her sudden exit has intensified the turmoil already engulfing the RJD.

'Quitting politics, disowning family'

In her social media post, Rohini said she was not only stepping away from politics but also “disowning” her family—an unusually personal and public rupture for a political clan known for managing internal tensions carefully.

Her decision came at a particularly vulnerable moment for the RJD, which is reeling from a major electoral setback.

Rohini points finger at Tejashwi Yadav’s aides

Rohini cryptically claimed that Sanjay Yadav and Rameez—both close aides of Tejashwi Yadav—were behind the pressure that led to her decision.

“This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez asked me to do…and I am taking all the blame,” she wrote.

Sanjay Yadav, an RJD Rajya Sabha MP, is considered Tejashwi’s most influential strategist, while Rameez is an old friend from a political family in Uttar Pradesh.

Neither has responded publicly, fuelling speculation about behind-the-scenes power struggles within the party.

Tensions after Tej Pratap’s expulsion set the stage

Rohini’s departure comes just months after Lalu’s elder son, Tej Pratap Yadav, was expelled from the family and the RJD following a controversy over a Facebook post about a personal relationship.

Tej Pratap later launched the Janshakti Janta Dal (JJD) and contested the Mahua seat, finishing a distant third.

Many observers believe Rohini was deeply upset by the manner in which Tej Pratap was sidelined.

Though she campaigned for Tejashwi during the elections, her resignation hints at simmering tensions that never fully healed.

RJD’s electoral collapse intensifies internal blame game

The feud has erupted publicly at a time when the RJD is facing one of its worst setbacks. Contesting 143 seats, the party won only 25. The NDA swept the election with 202 seats, with the BJP and JD(U) leading the charge.

The Mahagathbandhan—comprising the RJD, Congress and Left parties—barely managed 35 seats.

This disastrous result has put Tejashwi Yadav under immense pressure, triggering a round of internal recriminations—now spilling over into the family.

Rohini’s mixed signals before dramatic exit

In the months before the elections, Rohini appeared to be sending contradictory messages.

She unfollowed political leaders and family members on social media, accused unnamed people of spreading misinformation, and publicly defended her kidney donation to her father.

Yet she later campaigned for Tejashwi, publicly praised him on his birthday, and projected unity within the family.

Her abrupt decision to quit and publicly “disown” the family suggests a deeper rift—one that was quietly building well before the RJD’s electoral defeat.

Deepening rift in the Lalu Yadav household

With Tej Pratap already expelled and Rohini now distancing herself entirely, the Lalu Yadav family is undergoing one of its most turbulent periods.

The timing—immediately after the RJD’s heavy election loss—underscores how personal and political tensions have collided, leaving the party grappling with both electoral and internal crises.
