Ladakh's Zanskar lake blocked after landslide
Reports said local people are apprehensive of flash floods if the ice melts, threatening the lives of 4000 people living in the low-lying areas.
The landslide blocked a tributary near the Kargil headquarters. This created a 5km-long artificial lake upstream.
The depth and size of the lake is reportedly increasing every day. The authorities are scared that if the lake starts to melt it will engulf the populated areas.
The national disaster management authority recently conducted a survey of the area but could not make a safe course for the lake or the blocked river.
Rohit Kansal, Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir told CNN-IBN, "We have sounded a high alert in the area and sent out teams to caution the movement of civilians. The MDMA team has carried out a survey and the problem would be sorted."
Zanskar remains cut off during winters due to heavy snowfall. Many villagers and tourists prefer walking several kilometres on the frozen river to reach Leh, trekking though a stretch of breathtaking beauty.
