Kudankulam nuclear reactor starts generating electricity on commercial basis

| | Dec 31, 2014, at 03:38 pm
New Delhi, Dec 31 (IBNS): India’s largest nuclear reactor at Kudankulam started generating electricity on a commercial basis on Wednesday, media reports said.

Sources said the 1000 MW of electricity will provide much needed relief to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka and Kerala where power output will be increased.

The reactor was made at a cost of over Rs. 8000 crores. The construction work was amid protests by activists who called it ‘unsafe’.

India recently signed a deal for importing another 14 reactors from Russia. The second 1000 MW unit at Kudankulam is likely to come online in 2015, reports said.
