They said unidentified gunmen barged into the residence of the retired Army jawan, identified as Abdul Hamid Mandoo at Buchroo in Kulgam at around 2050 hrs on Sunday.

''The gunmen fired at Mandoo, resulting in critical injuries to him,'' they further said, adding the gunmen managed to escape from the spot under the cover of darkness.

The injured was immediately taken to District Hospital Anantnag from where he was referred to Army’s 92 Base hospital in Srinagar.

''After battling for his life for several hours, Mandoo succumbed in the wee hours on Monday,'' they stated.
