Kashmir: Raped by father, girl commits suicide in Bandipora

Srinagar, Apr 13 (UNI) A girl on Saturday committed suicide by consuming poison after allegedly being raped by her father in north Kashmir district of Bandipora.

Expressing shock over the incident, former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said ‘what kind of a sick depraved monster would do this’.

Official sources said that a girl (name withheld) allegedly consumed some poisonous substance at her residence in Chaliwaan Chattybandi in Bandipora. “The girl was taken to a hospital where she succumbed,” they said.

They said the girl took this extreme step after she was allegedly raped by her father. “The accused person has been arrested and a case has been registered into the incident,” they said.

They said the body has been sent for post-mortem to confirm the rape and cause of the death.

“What kind of a sick depraved monster would do this? Society tells our girls that they shouldn’t step outdoors & stay home where they’re safe. But what if they aren’t safe even within the confines of their own homes? Who can a girl trust if not even her own father?” Ms Mehbooba, who is the president of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.
