Kangana Ranaut hails BJP’s historic BMC win, calls it 'justice' after 2020 demolition row

Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Thursday congratulated her party leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, after the BJP secured a historic victory in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections — India’s richest civic body.

The result also carries personal significance for Ranaut, whose office attached to her Mumbai bungalow was demolished by the BMC in 2020, when the undivided Shiv Sena controlled the civic body.

The Bombay High Court had later described the demolition as “nothing but malice in law.”

“I am absolutely thrilled with the BJP’s landslide victory in the Maharashtra BMC election,” Ranaut told NDTV.

“I congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ji, and the entire BJP family of Maharashtra for this incredible saffron sweep all the way. It’s a big win for all of us.”

Recalling the demolition episode, the actor-turned-politician said the verdict marked a form of justice. “And for those who abused me, demolished my house, called me names, and threatened me to leave Maharashtra — today Maharashtra has left them,” she said.

“I am glad such women-haters, bullies, and nepotism mafia are being shown their right place by the janta janardan,” Ranaut added.

BMC results snapshot

According to latest trends for 210 of the 227 wards in Mumbai, the BJP is leading in 90 seats, while the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena is ahead in 28 wards.

The Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which contested separately, is leading in just three wards.

In the Opposition camp, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) is leading in 57 wards, its ally Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) in nine, while the Congress, contesting alongside the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), is ahead in 15 wards. Others are leading in eight.

The numbers indicate the end of Shiv Sena (UBT)’s long-standing dominance over the BMC.

The BJP contested 137 seats, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena 90, and the Ajit Pawar NCP faction fielded candidates in 94 wards.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) contested 163 seats, the MNS 52, the Congress 143, and the VBA 46.

What changed

The outcome follows a broader trend seen in recent civic polls, including Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, where the once-dominant Pawar brand failed to translate into decisive electoral gains.

Despite tactical coordination between the Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar factions of the NCP, voter consolidation did not materialise as expected, signalling a shift in urban political dynamics.
