Jammu and Kashmir: Mehbooba Mufti files nomination papers from Anantnag seat

| @indiablooms | Apr 03, 2019, at 02:57 pm

Anantnag, Apr 3 (UNI) Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday filed nomination papers for the upcoming Parliamentary election from Anantnag Lok Sabha seat.

After filing the papers, Mufti said she was overcome with emotion since this was the first election she will contest without her father’s guidance and support. However, the former chief minister of J&K said that she has confidence that people will restore their faith in PDP.

PDP patron and Ms Mufti’s father Mufti Mohammad Syed, who was the then chief minister of the J&K, died on January 7, 2016 at the AIIMS hospital in New Delhi. Ms Mufti, who was the sitting MP from Anantnag LS seat, had to resign and take over as the chief minister of the state.

The bypoll to fill the seat could not take place as poll officials felt the security situation was not conducive, leaving the parliamentary constituency unrepresented for about three years.

National Conference (NC) has already announced the candidature of former justice (retired) Husnain Masoodi while Congress is yet to announce any candidate for Anantnag seat, where polling will be held in three phases -- April 23, April 29, May 6.
