Insurgency at an all time low, need to review deployment of forces in North East: Rajnath

Guwahati, July 11 (IBNS): Union home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said overall level of insurgency is at all time low while noting that there is a need to review deployment of security forces in the North East region.
Addressing the Chief Ministers conference of the North Eastern region at Guwahati in Assam, Singh said, "Happy to say that there has been significant improvement in the security scenario in the North-East. NE region should be hub of peace, progress and development."

Singh noted that overall level of insurgency is at all time low.

"I appreciate the hard work done by CAPFs, Assam police and the Army after the heinous killings of Adivasis in last December in Assam. Special and concerted efforts of Assam CM Sh Tarun Gogoi deserves special mention for action against NDFB.I congratulate him for his action," the Union Minister said.

Speaking about people-oriented initiatives, Singh said: "Peace initiatives of the government of India with insurgent organisations are on the right track. We hope to bring them to logical conclusion. We must think plan and deliver on People-centric security," he said.

Singh said several small residual insurgent groups were operating from their safe havens across the border and are engaged in kidnapping for ransom, which had almost doubled in Assam and Meghalaya.

"The state police must pay greater attention to registration and investigation of crimes. There is a need to have Special Investigation Cells to tackle cases of extortion and kidnapping for ransom," he said.

Singh said youth insurgents are welcomed to mainstream.

"Youth involved in insurgency today realise their mistakes and are seeking safe ways to lead a normal life. They are welcome to mainstream," said he.

He urged CMs of the region to resolve boundary disputes mutually and ensure under no circumstances the disputes develop into active tension.

"I urge all CMs concerned to provide land for border fencing and expedite land acquisition on urgent basis wherever it is pending," Singh said.
