India's war against coronavirus is truly people-driven: PM Modi in Mann Ki Baat
New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed his monthly radio broadcast Mann Ki Baat where he said the war against the deadly coronavirus has become a people's movement in the country.
He said the "people's driven fight" against COVID-19 will be discussed in future.
"We are fortunate that every individual of this country is fighting together in the war against the coronavirus," he said while addressing the radio broadcast.
Appreciating the people's involvement in the fight against the deadly virus, Modi said: "I bow down to you."
He also acknowledged the role of the state governments in dealing with this highly contagious. "They have played a very active role," the PM noted.
Praising the humanitarian measures by different people across the country, PM Modi said: "Whether in a city or a village, everywhere we can see people involved in the fight against the pandemic. While some are feeding the poor, others are selling land to raise money for this fight, yet others are contributing their pension."
Asking everyone to maintain more hygiene, Modi said: "We always knew that spitting in public places is wrong. Yet, it continued in places. Now is the best time to ensure we do not spit."
The PM will once again hold a video conference with all Chief Ministers on Apr 27 to discuss the present situation and the future course as the country eyes deep economic crisis owing to the lockdown.
On Apr 14, Modi extended the country-wide lockdown on the basis of requests from several chief ministers as the coronavirus cases continued to witness a steep rise.
Meanwhile, India witnessed 1,990 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, setting a new record in the single-day spike, which took the total tally to 26, 496.
The death toll has mounted up to 824, the Union Health Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
Of the total deaths, 49 were registered from different parts of the country in the last 24 hours.
