India, China to consult, cooperate on peace of Afghanistan
New Delhi, May 11 (UNI) India and China would consult closely on the evolving situation in Afghanistan and cooperate in carrying forward the decision taken by the leadership of the two countries.
This was decided during discussions Chinese Special Envoy Ambassador Deng Xijun held with Indian officials here on the situation in Afghanistan, including peace and reconciliation efforts in the conflict-wracked South Asian country.
Deng called on Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale on Friday.
"The two sides agreed to consult closely on the evolving situation in Afghanistan and carry forward the decision taken by the leadership of the two countries on joint cooperation in Afghanistan," said External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar.
Afghanistan has become the key hub for "China-India Plus" cooperation plan agreed upon by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping following their informal Wuhan summit in April last year.
The two countries are jointly training diplomats from Afghanistan.
Earlier this week, US Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad was in New Delhi for consultations with Indian officials and other stakeholders on the Afghan peace process.
The US and Taliban negotiators on Thursday wrapped up their sixth round of peace talks in Doha with "some progress" made on a draft agreement for when foreign troops could withdraw from Afghanistan.
