India calls off foreign secretary level talks with Pakistan

| | Aug 18, 2014, at 11:59 pm
New Delhi, Aug 18 (IBNS): India has called off the foreign secretary level talks with Pakistan that was scheduled in Islamabad on Aug 25 after the Pakistan envoy called the Kashmiri separatist leaders ahead of the dialogue for consultation, said the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday.
Pakistan High Commissioner in India Abdul Basit has invited Kashmiri separatist leaders in New Delhi for "consultations" ahead of the talks, a move that angered the government in New Delhi.

India's External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said that Pakistan's interference in India's internal affairs is unacceptable.

He said the talks stand cancelled since a visit by Indian foreign secretary Sujatha Singh will not serve any purpose.

Talks were also suspended last year over the beheading of Indian soldiers by Pakistani troopers.

There is also an ongoing border skirmish as at least 20 Border Security Force (BSF) posts were fired upon by Pakistan troopers in Arania and RS Pura sectors in Jammu since the wee hours of Sunday, prompting the BSF to retaliate and trigger a gunbattle, said officials on Monday.
