India begins evacuation of stranded citizens from Iran amid unrest, first flight tomorrow
India on Thursday issued an urgent advisory asking its citizens to leave Iran and announced plans to evacuate them amid escalating security concerns in the country, media reports said.
The first evacuation flight is scheduled to depart from Tehran to New Delhi on Friday, officials said.
The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) said all Indian students in Iran have been registered, with the Indian Embassy collecting their personal details and passports.
“The first batch has been informed to remain ready by 8 am,” the association said in a statement.
Students from Golestan University, along with a few students from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Tehran University of Medical Sciences, will form the first group to be evacuated.
The final passenger list will be shared later tonight after official confirmation.
On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi over the phone to discuss the evolving situation in and around Iran.
Separately, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) advised Indian nationals to avoid all non-essential travel to Iran. According to the MEA, around 10,000 Indian citizens are currently residing in the country.
The advisory comes amid intensifying unrest in Iran, triggered by a sharp collapse in the value of the Iranian rial late last month.
Protests that began in Tehran over economic hardship have since spread to all 31 provinces, evolving into wider demands for political reform.
Regional tensions have further escalated following warnings by US President Donald Trump, who has threatened “very strong action,” including possible military strikes, if Iran continues its violent crackdown on protesters.
In response, Iran’s leadership has declared it is “ready for war” and warned of retaliatory strikes on US military bases across the region in the event of an attack.
