Indefinite strike (chakka bandh) called by Assam’s transport body begins

| @indiablooms | Oct 05, 2020, at 10:15 pm

Guwahati/IBNS: Passengers across the state have been affected after a major transport body All Assam Motor Transport Association called an indefinite strike (Chakka bandh) since Monday morning by demanding fare hikes and other demands.

The passenger vehicles are off on roads in the state since Monday morning during the indefinite strike.

The transport body is seeking relief from the government as the owners and employees of the passenger vehicles had suffered huge losses during the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and nationwide lockdown period.

They have also demanded an increase of transport fares including bus fares, a waiver in road tax for a year.

“During the lockdown exemptions, the government asked us to ply the passenger vehicles on roads with 50 percent passengers and we are following the government orders. We have paid taxes to the government against each passenger and so that the government should take 50 percent taxes. Lastly, we had submitted our memorandum to the government on October 1, but they didn’t do anything.

"Finally, we have decided to go for an indefinite strike from October 5,” All Assam Motor Transport Association Secretary General Pradip Das said.

Pradip Das also said that fuel price is increasing and it has also hit the transporters.
