Shimla/UNI: The State police braved harsh weather conditions to rescue about 300 tourists stranded in their vehicles due to inability to find lodging in the sparsely populated upper reaches of Kullu district.

The tourists were stranded on the road inside their vehicles on Saturday night.

Police confirmed that a number of tourists had crossed the tunnel on Saturday morning but did not return in the evening.

These vehicles carrying tourists were stranded in the midway while returning to Manali as they could not find any place for staying in Lahaul Valley.

As the vehicles carrying tourists were stranded on the slippery snowy roads inside the tunnel, a team of Kullu Police rushed to the tunnel in the evening.

To rescue the stranded tourists back to Manali around 70 vehicles, including a 48-seater bus, a 24-seater police bus and one police quick reaction team (QRT) were deployed to the clear the road near the tunnel for rescuing the tourists.

The world's longest tunnel at an altitude of 10,040 feet, Atal Tunnel has become a tourist destination since it was thrown open to the public in October, 2020.

The 9.02-km underpass beneath 13,058-feet-high Rohtang Pass connects Lahaul of Lahaul-Spiti district and Manali of Kullu district in the state.

Almost every tourist who comes to Manali visits the tunnel, considered an engineering marvel.
