Hijab-insisting teachers in Karnataka exempted from exam duty
Bengaluru/UNI: Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh on Monday said some educational management has decided not to force hijab-insisting teachers to take up exam duty.
"As hijab is not allowed inside the examination hall for students, it will not be morally right for teachers to wear hijab before the students. Some educational managements have decided not to force hijab-insisting teachers to up exam duty. They have given them the option to take exam duty or not," he told reporters here.
This rule is applicable for this year's Karnataka SSLC and Karnataka PUC Exams.
Last week, a Mysuru teacher who took up exam duty was not allowed to enter the institution as she insisted on wearing a hijab.
The Karnataka High Court on Feb 25 had dismissed pro-hijab petitions ruling that the hijab does not constitute an essential practice of Islam.
The state government had issued an order last week prohibiting the wear of hijab at exam venues.
Pre-Univesity exams were boycotted by around 40 Muslim girl students in Udupi last week, including two of the pro-hijab petitioners.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had earlier stated, “All students must comply with the High court order. Your education is important, all should attend classes, do not skip examinations and shape your future."
