Heavy downpour causes flooding, traffic snarls on major roads in Delhi and surrounding region

The weatherman has predicted more rains for the national capital and Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad.

After the Wednesday morning's downpour, major stretches of arterial roads in the area are inundated, said media reports.

Delhi Police had to issue advisory for the common people, informing them about the routes with heavy jams, to ensure hassle free commuting.

According to Indian Meteorological Department the south-westerly winds from the Arabian Sea and south-easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are feeding moisture to the Delhi and NCR region, causing heavy rains, said an NDTV report.

The Safdarjung Observatory, which records volume of rainfall for the city, said so far in August there has been 139.2 mm rainfall against the normal of 157.1 mm, 11 mm less than the usual volume, said the NDTV report.

However, the city has recorded 457.8 mm rainfall, 6 per cent above the normal of 433.2 mm since June 1, after the onset of monsoon this year.

Skymet weather in a late night tweet had predicted Delhi and its adjacent areas will receive rainfall for the next 24 hours.

"During the next 24 hours, light to moderate rains are possible over Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala," Skymet weather tweeted.
